I dag hadde vi engelsktentamen, og jeg tenkte jeg skulle legge besvarelsen min på bloggen min. Oppgaven jeg valgte var: “Do you believe in God, or do you believe in science? Write an essay where you explore the meaning of life.” Håper jeg får god karakter!

The Catcher of Fireflies

Man’s life is filled with eternal enigmas. Our origin, our purpose and the final terminal of our journey. Has life a meaning? I cannot say. Many have tried and failed. One can look to the great philosophers, one can look to scientists and great men of our time. Yet, they all fail to illustrate what will come, what is inevitable, and why it must be so.

They say our eyes are the windows of our soul. One can stare into the blackness in their center and see the true self. Many believe in that blackness, others in the great beyond. I do neither, for I belive in neither science nor God. Man does good and man does evil, and must battle the latter to make the former endure and prosper.

That, I believe, is the purpose. And this puprose alone obsoletes the questions of the origin and the final destination. I, however, see only blackness. No soul returns my gaze. Not in the mirror, nor in the reflection of water. Blackness is all there is, it seems.

I look upon the sky at night and wonder: Is there something there i cannot see? Is there something present that escapes all my senses and dwells in the twilight of reality and reason? I know not, but I do see the stars. They glimmer like fireflies eternities away. Clouds may cover them, but clouds do not linger. They are fleeting and swift like the blink of an eye. Like Man and his kin.

Some seek answers in machines and test tubes, others in the great beyond. I do neither, for I believe in neither science nor God. Is it then all random chance? Perhaps, perhaps not. Does one need a purpose to do good unto others?

We may always behold the beuty of the fireflies, even if they are forever beyond our grasp.
